A recent investigation has illuminated the careful upkeep practices of the crew on the Roman shipwreck Ilovik-Par\u017eine 1, providing insight into ancient seafaring and conservation methods. Located off the coast of present-day Croatia, the shipwreck is estimated to be around 2200 years old. Researchers have explored the organic coatings utilized for waterproofing the vessel’s exterior, uncovering details regarding its history and journey.<\/p>\n
Armelle Charri\u00e9-Duhaut from Strasbourg University led the investigation, noting that each ship’s coating represents local resources and, thus, its distinct narrative. By employing infrared spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, her team analyzed 10 samples, discovering that the ship underwent recoating four to five times throughout its operational life.<\/p>\n
Most of the samples were abundant in abietic acid derivatives, signaling the use of pitch sourced from pine tree resin. One specific sample included beeswax, which improves hydrophobicity and facilitates application.
