His name was chosen in honor of his grandfathers Henry Stuart (1564\u20131567), the second spouse of Mary, Queen of Scots (1542\u20131587), and Frederick II of Denmark (1534\u20131588), a supporter of Tycho Brahe (1546\u20131601). Upon their marriage, James and Anne visited Tycho&#8217;s observatory Uraniborg located on the island of Hven in 1589.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thonyc.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/henry_prince_of_wales_after_isaac_oliver.jpg\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Henry Prince of Wales c. 1610 after Isaac Oliver Source: Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Henry was raised apart from his mother, nurtured by foster guardians at Stirling Castle. His broad and diverse education commenced here, encompassing various sports, music, and dance. In 1603, James ascended to the English throne, becoming James I of England, and Henry soon joined him in England, where he assumed the titles Duke of Cornwall and Prince of Wales, thereby becoming the heir apparent to both the English and Scottish crowns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His education progressed with James instructing that Henry\u2019s household \u201cshould rather imitate a Collage than a Court.\u201d Thomas Chaloner (1559\u20131615) was appointed as the governor of Prince Henry\u2019s household, which he characterized in 1607 as \u201cHis Highness\u2019s household [&#8230; ] was intended by the King for a <em>courtly college<\/em> or a <em>collegiate court<\/em>\u201d (Wikipedia). As mentioned, his education spanned various subjects. During his teenage years, Henry developed a keen interest in geography, supporting the Elizabethan vision of establishing colonies and creating a British Empire, <a href=\"https:\/\/thonyc.wordpress.com\/2025\/06\/25\/a-promoter-of-empire\/\">initially proposed by John Dee (1527\u20131609) and further advocated by Richard Hakluyt (1553\u20131616).<\/a> Additionally, Henry showed a strong inclination towards naval and military matters, which he pursued from an early age.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thonyc.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/chiswick_st_nicholass_church_monument_of_sir_thomas_chaloner.jpg\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Monument to Sir Thomas Chaloner in St Nicholas Church, Chiswick Source: Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1604, Charles Howard, Earl of Nottingham and Lord High Admiral (1536\u20131624), introduced Prince Henry to the shipwright Phineas Pett (1570\u20131647):<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thonyc.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/phineas_pett_from_npg.jpg\"><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Phineas Pett artist unknown Source: Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pett crafted a miniature vessel for the Prince at Chatham. The keel measured 28 feet with a breadth of 12 feet and was completed \u201cbattlement-wise\u201d like the <em>Ark Royal.<\/em> On 22 March, Pett presented the vessel to Prince Henry, who named it the <em>Disdain<\/em> and \u201centertained it with great joy, being purposely made to disport himself withal.\u201d On 26 April 1604, James I of England awarded Phineas, described as a servant of Prince Henry, a daily grant of a shilling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">[\u2026]<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1607, Pett created and presented a ship model intended for Prince Henry to Howard.
