It is an emotion that broadens one’s subjective perception of time, fostering patience and generosity, as demonstrated in studies conducted by Rudd, Vohs, and Aaker. Awe goes beyond typical self-interests, cultivating a “small self” perspective where individual concerns fade away, allowing for wider connections and generosity.

Awe is frequently linked to vastness that stretches understanding, as described by Keltner and Haidt, reshaping our self-concept by making us feel a part of something much greater. Research indicates that awe can lessen the feeling of time scarcity, decreasing impatience and enhancing the willingness to assist others by transforming our perception of time, rather than the actual passage of time.

Awe encourages prosocial behaviors, impacting generosity, ethical decision-making, and acts of help. It diminishes self-centeredness, nurturing a bond with a more extensive humanity. It can be nurtured through simple activities, such as “awe walks” that direct attention towards the larger world, boosting positive emotions and self-image.

This emotion is not merely a fleeting feeling but a life-changing experience that expands one’s view of the world instead of merely adding hours to the day. It stimulates a transition from immediate, self-centered thinking to a more expansive perspective, creating space for patience and giving. By intentionally participating in awe-inducing experiences, we establish chances for personal growth and prosocial actions, advocating for a larger, more interconnected worldview.

Awe, a deep-seated emotion, can arise from grand spectacles such as the night sky or mountain ranges, as well as fleeting moments like sunlight filtering through trees or soaring cathedral ceilings.
