This new eight-storey, 30,000m\u00b2 building is meant to accommodate upgraded equipment essential for upholding high educational standards within the university&#8217;s Institute of Chemistry. Yet, the considerable investment in Katowice, situated in southern Poland, has sparked some controversy.<\/p>\n<p>Critics within the university have noted that the Institute currently serves around 400 students and 96 staff members, a figure that is decreasing as interest in studying chemistry in this location continues to diminish. Nevertheless, construction commenced in May 2025, after the university successfully secured financing from the EU&#8217;s regional development fund for the 2021 to 2027 timeline, which is expected to cover about 75% of the project&#8217;s expenses.<\/p>\n<p>Local media outlet, Gazeta Wyborcza, has pointed out increasing dissatisfaction among the university personnel, who feel the project&#8217;s magnitude surpasses what is required based on the student and staff population, particularly given its status as one of the university&#8217;s lesser-liked programs. Opposition to the project has grown more pronounced since the revelation of the university&#8217;s financial difficulties, which included a PLN33 million net loss for the financial year 2025. This loss prompted a cost-reduction initiative and raised student fees for services such as accommodation.<\/p>\n<p>In response to these criticisms, university officials assert that the new building is crucial for attracting students. They contend that modern infrastructure is necessary to compete with other institutions, such as the Silesian University of Technology in nearby Gliwice, which is drawing prospective chemistry students away. According to Jacek Szymik-Kozaczko, a spokesperson for the University of Silesia, the initiative is in line with the university\u2019s strategic objectives for fostering open and interdisciplinary science. The anticipated completion date for the building is 2027.<\/p>\n<p>The new chemistry centre is intended to be a component of the larger Network Science Centre, which includes seven public universities in Katowice. It will offer a variety of facilities including teaching laboratories, research labs, sports amenities, and communal areas like a caf\u00e9 and garden that will be open to both the university community and local residents.
