Japan has officially become the 23rd non-EU nation to join Horizon Europe, the EU’s premier research funding initiative. This agreement, which came into effect on 30 July, enables Japanese researchers to access portions of the Horizon programme on equal footing with EU researchers.<\/p>\n
Horizon Europe is the largest research funding body globally, featuring a budget of \u20ac93.5 billion (\u00a380 billion). Although negotiations for Japan’s association were finalized in December 2025, transitional measures have already allowed Japanese researchers to submit applications for funding calls.<\/p>\n
Japan has fully engaged with Horizon’s pillar 2, which has a budget of \u20ac52 billion and tackles major global issues, including health, digital transitions, climate, and agriculture. On equal terms with researchers from EU member states, Japanese researchers can now lead international research consortia and engage in collaborations funded by other pillars of Horizon.<\/p>\n
The Japanese government will invest \u20ac14 million to participate in this programme for the upcoming two years. With a population of 123 million, Japan is the most populous country linked with Horizon Europe.<\/p>\n
The European Commission indicates that Japan’s association with Horizon is a significant milestone in the EU\u2013Japan Strategic Partnership, which was established in 2018 to strengthen political and economic relations. Ekaterina Zaharieva, the European commissioner for startups, research and innovation, highlighted the significance of this association, asserting that the exchange of global talent is essential for transforming research into innovation and, consequently, innovation into prosperity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
