Instruct them that they can eat it now or wait fifteen minutes to receive two. Exit the room.<\/p>\n<p>This is among the most well-known psychological experiments ever performed. Walter Mischel conducted the original at Stanford during the late 1960s, and when he later revisited the children, those who had waited were excelling in nearly all areas \u2014 academics, SAT scores, emotional self-regulation, and body weight. According to the narrative, a single moment of self-control in childhood could forecast the course of a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, a group of researchers replicated the experiment with ten times the number of children. Most of the assertions from the original narrative turned out to be incorrect.<\/p>\n<p>What the replication actually revealed<\/p>\n<p>The study was directed by Tyler Watts from New York University, alongside Greg Duncan and Haonan Quan. Instead of conducting a new marshmallow test from the ground up, they utilized the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development \u2014 an extensive longitudinal study that had previously assessed the delay of gratification in 918 four-year-olds and subsequently monitored these children into adolescence.<\/p>\n<p>Nine hundred eighteen children represent roughly tenfold the sample size of Mischel\u2019s initial research. It was also significantly more diverse in terms of socioeconomic and demographic factors. The original Stanford study recruited its participants from the Bing Nursery School, an exclusive preschool linked to the university and mainly attended by children of Stanford faculty and staff. In contrast, the NICHD sample encompassed children from various backgrounds across the United States.<\/p>\n<p>When Watts and his team performed the standard analysis \u2014 the one that yielded Mischel\u2019s famous findings \u2014 they observed a correlation, but it was considerably weaker. Among the 552 children whose mothers had not attained a college degree, an extra minute of waiting at age four only predicted about a tenth of a standard deviation improvement in academic performance by age 15. The bivariate correlation was roughly half the magnitude of the effect Mischel had documented.<\/p>\n<p>They then introduced statistical controls for family background, early cognitive skills, and the home environment. The correlation further diminished by about two-thirds. After accounting for these variables, the four-year-old\u2019s capacity to wait for the second marshmallow explained nearly none of the variance in the outcomes of the fifteen-year-olds.<\/p>\n<p>What forecasted the teenage results was not willpower. It was the unique set of resources, education, and environment in which the child had been raised. Willpower seemed to indicate success in the original study because it was associated with those factors, not because it independently influenced them.<\/p>\n<p>What the four-year-olds were likely actually doing<\/p>\n<p>This is where the narrative becomes more fascinating than the typical \u201cwillpower is irrelevant\u201d reinterpretation.<\/p>\n<p>A child at a table with a marshmallow is making a choice based on their previous experiences in the world. If that world has reliably delivered on its assurances \u2014 if adults who promised to return have consistently done so, if offers of two marshmallows have always resulted in receiving two \u2014 then waiting is a logical approach. The child has proof that patience will yield rewards.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, if that world has been less dependable \u2014 if adults have broken promises, if scarcity has frequently marked the child&#8217;s life, if the food available now may not be available later \u2014 then choosing to eat the marshmallow right away is also a logical approach. In fact, it may even be the more rational choice. A bird in the hand.<\/p>\n<p>Some studies have directly examined this. A 2013 experiment by Celeste Kidd, Holly Palmeri, and Richard Aslin at the University of Rochester presented children with either a \u201creliable\u201d or \u201cunreliable\u201d experimenter before administering a marshmallow test. Children who encountered an unreliable adult waited, on average, three minutes for the second marshmallow. Those who experienced a reliable adult waited four times as long. The willpower measured, in essence, was significantly influenced by whether the child had a reason to trust the world they faced.<\/p>\n<p>Four-year-olds from secure, resource-abundant, promise-keeping households are more inclined to wait. Four-year-olds from less stable settings are more prone to eat. Both are making rational choices based on their evidence. Both are also likely to have markedly different life outcomes \u2014 but not due to their marshmallow decision. Rather, due to the environments that shaped their perceptions of the value of promises.<\/p>\n<p>What the debate truly revolves around<\/p>\n<p>The Watts replication itself has faced scrutiny from psychologists who contend that the statistical controls implemented by the team may have been overly stringent. A 2019 commentary by Angela Duckworth and colleagues posited that some of the variables included by Watts \u2014 early cognitive ability, home environment \u2014 might have encompassed elements of self-control itself, not just confounding factors.
