This research, a randomized, waitlist-controlled trial, evaluated a two-week program comprising daily Stoic exercises, featuring three exercises each day and readings every other day. The study divided 119 participants into a Stoic training group and a waitlist control group, tracking their progress prior to, immediately after, and one month following the intervention.

Significant results indicated that the Stoic training group showed a substantial decrease in symptoms of depression and experiential avoidance when compared to the control group. Improvements in depression were noted right away and remained consistent over a month, with 38% exhibiting clinical improvement right after and 34% a month later. Enhancements in anxiety were observed with a delay, as 25% demonstrated significant reductions immediately and 32% after a month.

The implications of the study are moderated by its sample size and non-clinical demographic. Its findings correspond with broader, albeit uncontrolled, research from Stoic Week, which notes increases in life satisfaction and resilience among participants.

The trial highlights Stoicism’s philosophical connections to cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), particularly in dealing with thought processes related to emotions. However, it does not examine popular interpretations of Stoicism that emphasize balancing empathy with setting boundaries, as these aspects were not evaluated in the trial.

The research, awaiting peer review, indicates possible advantages of Stoic training within general populations but is not intended to replace professional mental health counsel. Further extensive studies are necessary to investigate its therapeutic effectiveness more comprehensively.

A recent investigation conducted by Royal Holloway, University of London, under the direction of psychologist Georgina King, examined the effects of Stoic training on mental well-being.
