There is genuine consensus regarding appearances, but it is most pronounced in contexts where it holds the least weight, among acquaintances, and it diminishes as your familiarity with a person increases.<\/p>\n<p>I am a writer, not a psychologist, so consider this a careful analysis of the research rather than professional insight.<\/p>\n<h2>What strangers concur on<\/h2>\n<p>At first glance, people from varying cultures tend to agree on which faces they find appealing, and a few key features consistently emerge.<\/p>\n<p>One is surprisingly mundane: averageness. In a prominent 1990 study, Judith Langlois and Lori Roggman digitally <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Averageness\">combined many faces into composites<\/a> and discovered that people rated the averaged faces as more attractive than nearly all the individual faces that constituted them. It appears that a mathematically average face is particularly appealing, likely because it is simpler for the brain to process. Symmetry is beneficial as well, albeit not to the degree many assume.<\/p>\n<p>Familiarity serves as another subtle influence. We tend to prefer faces we have encountered before or those that resemble people we already know, an effect stemming from mere exposure rather than actual merit. Additionally, there exists the halo effect, recognized since the 1970s under the phrase \u201cwhat is beautiful is good,\u201d which describes our tendency to believe that attractive individuals are also kinder, more intelligent, and more trustworthy, with no evidence to support this belief.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, there is an authentic layer of agreement. It is, however, a superficial one, primarily observed among strangers who are assessed in mere seconds.<\/p>\n<h2>The finding that alters the question<\/h2>\n<p>A more intriguing result is the evolution of that agreement over time, with one study being particularly noteworthy.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, psychologists Lucy Hunt, Paul Eastwick, and Eli Finkel examined 167 couples, investigating how long partners had known each other before beginning to date. They discovered that couples who began dating shortly after meeting were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2015\/06\/150630100605.htm\">well-matched in physical attractiveness<\/a>, both perceived similarly by outside observers. Conversely, couples who had a long-standing acquaintance or friendship prior to dating exhibited considerably less similarity in appearance.<\/p>\n<p>The interpretation, published in the journal Psychological Science, suggests that consensus regarding attractiveness is strong at first glance when looks are mainly all you have to rely on, and it diminishes as individuals truly get to know each other. Over time, impressions evolve, as the researchers noted, becoming more unique and less consensual. Other attributes begin to influence who appears appealing to whom.<\/p>\n<p>In simpler terms, when individuals are strangers, there is a broad agreement on who is attractive. However, once people become acquainted, that agreement quietly disintegrates.<\/p>\n<h2>Why familiarity reshapes perception<\/h2>\n<p>Two phenomena appear to occur as familiarity deepens.<\/p>\n<p>The first is that familiarity continues to impact us. Repeatedly encountering the same face in everyday situations tends to enhance its likability, meaning that proximity can accomplish some of the tasks that an impressive first impression cannot.<\/p>\n<p>The second is that character becomes apparent, influencing how a face is perceived. In studies where individuals are provided information about someone\u2019s personality, discovering that a person is warm and likable increases their perceived physical attractiveness, while finding out they are unpleasant decreases it. A 2004 study by Kevin Kniffin and David Sloan Wilson expanded on this, prompting participants to evaluate the appearances of individuals they knew personally. A person\u2019s fondness and respect for another significantly forecasted how physically attractive they deemed them, with surprisingly little consensus among raters due to each evaluating a distinct history associated with that face.<\/p>\n<p>This is not just about people being courteous. The same face can genuinely appear different based on who one has learned is behind it. In essence, attraction is not merely assessed once and then archived. It is continually revised.<\/p>\n<h2>What this implies and does not imply<\/h2>\n<p>None of this suggests that physical appearance is irrelevant. It undoubtedly plays a role, particularly among strangers, on dating platforms, and in the initial moments of an encounter when there is little else to rely on.
