This target can be traced to 1965, when a Japanese firm, Yamasa Tokei Keiki, introduced a pedometer named the Manpo-kei, which means &#8220;ten-thousand step meter.&#8221; The 1964 Tokyo Olympics had ignited a national enthusiasm for fitness in Japan, and the round figure of 10,000 steps was memorable and visually striking in kanji. At that time, no scientific studies validated this particular benchmark.<\/p>\n<p>As time passed, this target evolved into a default criterion for pedometers and fitness trackers globally. When researchers later evaluated the impacts of step counts on health, the results were somewhat different. A study from 2019 published in JAMA Internal Medicine by Harvard Medical School epidemiologist I-Min Lee indicated that among older American women, increasing daily steps to around 4,400 significantly lowered death rates, with benefits persisting up to about 7,500 steps, after which they leveled off.<\/p>\n<p>Further analysis through a meta-study published in The Lancet Public Health by a team from the University of Sydney, led by Ding Ding, aggregated findings from 57 studies. This review showed that achieving up to 7,000 steps daily was linked to significant health advantages, including decreased mortality and dementia risk. However, the benefits of raising step goals beyond 7,000 began to taper off, although a higher step count still provided minor additional benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, step counts seem to be less influential when it comes to weight management. A study conducted on first-year university women over a six-month period revealed that those who followed high step goals gained about 1.5 kilograms on average, irrespective of their step count target. This suggests that while boosting step counts can elevate physical activity levels, it does not guarantee weight control.<\/p>\n<p>In the long run, walking appears to have the potential to influence body composition more significantly, as demonstrated by a 2022 Nature Medicine analysis connecting higher step counts with lower obesity risks. Notably, the greatest benefits were observed at levels exceeding approximately 8,200 steps per day.<\/p>\n<p>In practice, the gap between the entrenched 10,000-step goal and more subtle research findings often leads individuals to feel they are falling short each day.
