Data from the EU\u2019s Copernicus Earth observation program reported Spain\u2019s burned area for 2026 at over 200,000 hectares \u2014 approximately 0.4 percent of the entire nation, marking the highest proportional impact of any EU member state this year. The fires encompassed the largest single fire ever documented in Spain, igniting near Burgohondo in \u00c1vila province and ravaging over 50,000 hectares within a mere five days.<\/p>\n<p>I was among the individuals that statistic would later encompass, at a project camp in the province of Toledo. Not precisely as a statistic \u2014 more as a person waiting in line, anticipating instructions on the next steps, alongside individuals whose connection to that land differed vastly from mine.<\/p>\n<h2>A summer that shattered records before August even arrived<\/h2>\n<p>Spain wasn\u2019t enduring this battle solo, nor was it the sole country facing losses. Portugal registered the EU\u2019s second-largest burned proportion, at around 0.3 percent of its land, with every district in the north and center placed under the highest fire alert by the conclusion of July. France\u2019s Gironde fire, near Bordeaux, consumed nearly 42,000 hectares and is widely regarded as the largest wildfire the country has encountered since World War II \u2014 as well as the most extensive evacuation since that time. Algeria\u2019s emissions from wildfires that month reached record levels in the dataset tracking them since 2003.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the EU as a whole, more than 1,200 fires had been recorded by late July \u2014 more than double the historical yearly average \u2014 with over 250,000 hectares scorched across the bloc, an area comparable to the size of Luxembourg, and the season was still short of its apex. <a href=\"https:\/\/atmosphere.copernicus.eu\/extreme-wildfires-western-europe-expose-millions-dangerous-air-pollution-levels\">Copernicus\u2019s own reporting<\/a> estimated the number of individuals requiring refuge from the flames across France and Spain at nearly 400,000. Spain, in conjunction with France, activated the EU civil protection mechanism; Spain also proclaimed a national emergency.<\/p>\n<p>Spain\u2019s prime minister, Pedro S\u00e1nchez, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techtimes.com\/articles\/321961\/20260729\/europe-track-its-worst-wildfire-season-ever-satellite-data-show.htm\">cautioned that difficult times were still forthcoming<\/a> after more than 90,000 individuals had already evacuated their homes near Madrid and \u00c1vila alone. By the time the figures were compiled for Spain as a whole, at least fourteen fatalities had been accounted for within Spanish territory, and the EU\u2019s total emissions from the season had already surpassed eight million tonnes of CO2 \u2014 roughly equivalent to the annual carbon footprint of a million and a half Europeans, released into the atmosphere in just a few weeks.<\/p>\n<h2>The order to evacuate doesn&#8217;t inquire about your origins<\/h2>\n<p>None of that background was accessible to me in any coherent manner during the events. What I had was a directive: pack quickly, we\u2019re departing. No one requested to see identification before handing it to me. No one categorized the group by nationality before determining who boarded which bus, who received a cot in the shelter, who queued for food or water or a phone charger.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m a citizen of Georgia. I had no residence, no land, no ties to that specific region of Toledo. The evacuation order was indifferent to that. It was designed to transport people away from peril, not to categorize them by nationality first, and for a few hours, that rendered a whole aspect of my identity foreign, transient, and practically irrelevant. The same emergency systems coordinating resources across an entire continent were, at ground level, unconcerned about where any individual in that line originated.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s significant, and I don\u2019t believe it\u2019s merely coincidental. Emergency response, almost inherently, must be one of the few systems that regards \u201cperson in danger\u201d as an absolute category on its own. The moment it begins posing subsequent questions about status before offering refuge, it ceases to operate as an emergency response.<\/p>\n<p>In nearly every other scenario I can envision, being a foreigner alters how a system interacts with you, which forms you require, which line you fall into, which inquiries get made prior to which responses being provided. The only question posed to me that day was whether I was injured. No one asked what brought me to Spain, how long I intended to stay, or what my passport indicated.
