Instead of controlling situations or projecting flawlessness, it is the modest actions that may seem illogical at first that cultivate real respect. This article emphasizes findings from recent studies that question conventional beliefs, indicating that behaviors initially viewed as weaknesses are, in reality, effective in garnering true respect.

## Solicit Opinions from Others

One persistent misconception is that requesting advice signifies ineptitude. Nonetheless, a 2015 research study published in **Management Science**, called “Smart People Ask for (My) Advice,” by Alison Wood Brooks, Francesca Gino, and Maurice Schweitzer, refutes this idea. Through multiple experiments, they discovered that individuals who sought advice were perceived as more capable. This paradox benefits both parties: it acknowledges the advisor’s knowledge and demonstrates the asker’s confidence and wisdom in recognizing personal knowledge limits. However, it is not about posing trivial inquiries or inundating everyone with demands. The study clarifies effectiveness when seeking help on truly tough tasks from informed individuals, implying that asking wisely can improve perceived competence.

## Add Value to the Team

Another seemingly unproductive tactic is showing generosity in a competitive environment. The natural tendency is to gather credit and resources for oneself. However, sociologist Robb Willer, in a 2009 study titled “Groups Reward Individual Sacrifice,” published in the **American Sociological Review**, examined this concept. Research indicated that benevolent contributors within a group consistently achieved higher status, increased influence, and enhanced cooperation. This is because generosity conveys concern for the group’s well-being and is rewarded with respect, prompting further contributions, demonstrating that prioritizing group welfare over individual gain cultivates respect and trustworthiness.

## Why the Unconventional Habits Prevail

Anthropologists distinguish between two avenues to social status: dominance, which thrives on intimidation, and prestige, which is granted willingly due to ability and altruism. While both can elevate an individual within a group, only prestige leads to meaningful respect. Dominance may secure compliance, but it’s short-lived. In contrast, asking for advice and contributing to the group are based on prestige, increasing respect by uplifting others rather than subjugating them.

## What the Research Confirms and Does Not Confirm

Despite the promising results, several limitations are recognized. The applicability of these results is limited by cultural and situational factors, as much of the research originates from Western contexts. Furthermore, respect attained through these methods is not immediate but develops over time. Importantly, attempts to manipulate circumstances through insincerity may backfire, as authentic humility and generosity cannot be faked.

In conclusion, the quest for respect involves genuinely seeking advice and offering more to groups than taking away. While these behaviors may initially appear to lessen one’s standing, they have been shown to foster lasting respect. These insights challenge the prevailing narrative of confidence, aligning respect with the capacity to uplift others instead of striving to dominate them.

In a society where respect appears to rely on projection and authority, innovative research presents a new viewpoint on what genuinely earns respect.
