That succinctly summarizes the findings of Heinz Valtin, a kidney physiologist at Dartmouth Medical School, who dedicated his career to understanding how the body regulates water. He delved into electronic databases, examined older literature that hadn\u2019t been digitized, and consulted nutritionists focused on thirst and hydration. His 2002 review published in the American Journal of Physiology stated unequivocally that no scientific studies endorsed the guideline.<\/p>\n<p>The statement that was truncated <\/p>\n<p>The best hypothesis for the origin: a 1945 suggestion from the US Food and Nutrition Board, which established a recommended daily intake for adults at approximately 2.5 liters. Two and a half liters translates to about eight glasses. The next sentence mentioned that a significant portion of this quantity comes from foods consumed.<\/p>\n<p>That clause did not endure in the retelling.<\/p>\n<p>Aaron Carroll, a physician who tackles medical fallacies, traced the same 1945 language for the New York Times in 2015 and arrived at the same conclusion. Readers seized the number, ignored the qualifier, and an estimate of overall water consumption solidified into a drinking mandate. Eight decades later, the qualifier remains absent, and the figure continues to be cited.<\/p>\n<p>What the official recommendations actually say<\/p>\n<p>Anyone expecting a singular definitive number will be disappointed. When the Institute of Medicine of the US National Academies released water intake guidelines in 2004, its panel determined that most healthy individuals meet their hydration needs by following their thirst. Its primary figures, approximately 3.7 liters daily for men and 2.7 for women, encompass all beverages and every mouthful of food consumed, not just plain water, with about a fifth of that coming from food alone. Caffeinated beverages contribute to this total. Valtin\u2019s review posited that moderate beer consumption also counts.<\/p>\n<p>The actual intake variations among individuals<\/p>\n<p>Do those averages obscure significant differences? Absolutely. A 2022 study published in Science assessed water turnover in 5,604 individuals, ranging from eight days to 96 years old, across 23 countries, using deuterium tracking. Daily turnover varied from around one liter to over ten, influenced by body size, physical activity, air temperature, humidity, altitude, pregnancy, and even national development status. The authors noted that one size certainly does not fit all, emphasizing that the eight-glass guideline lacks objective evidence. Other researchers contributed to the journal asserting that turnover and optimal intake are distinct metrics, which is a valid point. One study, regardless of its size, remains just one study.<\/p>\n<p>The assertions associated with the guideline<\/p>\n<p>Detoxification. Improved skin, reduced headaches, simplified weight loss. Dan Negoianu and Stanley Goldfarb from the University of Pennsylvania examined the available clinical evidence for each of these claims in a 2008 editorial for the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology and found no supporting data for any of the four. They made a careful distinction: no one had proved the absence of benefits either, and in general, there was just very limited research available.<\/p>\n<p>On the more extreme end, there is research, and it is concerning. Christopher Almond and colleagues at Children\u2019s Hospital Boston analyzed blood from 488 runners post-2002 Boston Marathon and reported in the New England Journal of Medicine that 13 percent finished with hyponatremia, indicating dangerously diluted blood sodium levels. The leading factor was weight gained during the race.<\/p>\n<p>Gaining weight over 42 kilometers implies drinking more quickly than one sweats.<\/p>\n<p>Why a rule with no origin refuses to disappear<\/p>\n<p>Eight is a highly marketable number. It fits conveniently on a label, divides seamlessly into a workday, promotes sales of bottles and applications, encourages hourly reminders, and provides the daily satisfaction of ticking a box. Thirst provides none of those benefits.
