Both rejected him.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Southern California and UCLA both declined Steven Spielberg\u2019s application, citing straightforwardly that his academic performance was insufficient. The next part is what people often recount. Yet, what tends to be overlooked is the peculiar and winding journey that followed.<\/p>\n<p>We believe the narrative deserves a closer look. The polished tale, from rejection to success, glosses over the two distinct types of barriers Spielberg faced. One door remained shut, while he simply bypassed the other.<\/p>\n<p>The door that remained locked<\/p>\n<p>Spielberg described himself as an average student. Born in 1946, he grew up with what would eventually be identified as dyslexia, though it went undiagnosed for many years. His grades reflected a youth more interested in filmmaking than schooling. When he sought admission to USC&#8217;s film program, his grades spoke for themselves, resulting in a rejection.<\/p>\n<p>He has recounted his attempts to appeal the decision. Spielberg mentions that he pointed out to the institution, \u201cI understand you allow student-athletes in with C averages.\u201d It fell on deaf ears. Reports indicate that he faced rejection multiple times, with UCLA also opting to deny him.<\/p>\n<p>The path he chose instead<\/p>\n<p>Thus, he went where he was welcomed. Spielberg enrolled at what is now known as California State University, Long Beach in the summer of 1965. It wasn\u2019t the ideal launchpad that the Los Angeles film schools promised, and he never regarded it as the primary opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>According to Spielberg\u2019s narrative over the years, the real highlight was Universal Studios itself. In previous summers, he had made it a routine to visit the studio lot and build rapport with the staff. While USC secured its gates with transcripts, the studio had no means to exclude a determined youth with a compelling short film. This distinction became pivotal to his early career: an unavoidable barrier of credentials versus an open door to dialogue.<\/p>\n<p>The contract that transformed everything<\/p>\n<p>The short film was Amblin\u2019, a 26-minute work shot in 1968. It garnered the attention of Sidney Sheinberg, who was then a vice president at Universal Television, and achieved what a GPA never could. Sheinberg brought him on board.<\/p>\n<p>Spielberg explained it straightforwardly. He told The Hollywood Reporter that he \u201cwas spotted from Long Beach State and offered a chance to sign a seven-year contract and direct television.\u201d That contract made him, according to Amblin\u2019s context, the youngest director ever signed to a long-term agreement with a major Hollywood studio. He withdrew from Cal State Long Beach to seize the opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>Sheinberg positioned the gamble as a matter of loyalty rather than just talent. As Spielberg recalls, Sheinberg told him, \u201cmany will stay with you in success; I\u2019ll stay with you in failure.\u201d This led to television projects, followed by Jaws, E.T., Jurassic Park, and Schindler&#8217;s List, establishing him as one of the most commercially successful directors in the industry.<\/p>\n<p>What the two paths reveal<\/p>\n<p>The journey became recognized enough to be named in economic circles. Two researchers, Stacy Dale and Alan Krueger, were investigating the actual benefits of attending elite colleges, coining one of their findings after him.<\/p>\n<p>As summarized by the NBER regarding their research paper, they termed it \u201cthe \u2018Spielberg Model\u2019 because the well-known filmmaker applied to USC and UCLA film schools, only to be turned away, later attending Cal State Long Beach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Their analysis indicated that students admitted to selective institutions but opting for less competitive ones tended to have similar earnings thereafter. This stands as one influential perspective, not an unchangeable economic doctrine, and subsequent studies refined the findings. However, the name endured because Spielberg serves as an ideal illustration of the underlying insight: ambition and talent accompany the individual, not the degree.<\/p>\n<p>We should avoid interpreting this as evidence that credentials are inconsequential. Spielberg didn\u2019t surpass the gatekeeper purely on determination. He possessed years of self-directed filmmaking experience, a completed short film, and valuable connections. The credential mattered less mainly because he had crafted a stronger case for himself through tangible work.<\/p>\n<p>In 2002, at the age of 55, Spielberg returned to Cal State Long Beach to complete the degree he had once abandoned.
