The narrative is well-known, appearing in psychology textbooks, management workshops, and workplace training presentations: in the 1920s, researchers at Western Electric\u2019s Hawthorne Works plant in Cicero, Illinois, altered the lighting for a group of employees assembling telephone relays. Productivity increased. Subsequently, as the tale unfolds, they reduced the lighting once more, and productivity surged again. This led to the conclusion that the workers were not actually reacting to the light itself but rather to the sensation of being observed.<\/p>\n<p>This concept, that individuals modify their behavior merely because they are aware of their participation in a study, has become ingrained in how researchers approach experiments involving human participants. It boasts a name, a Wikipedia entry, and a steadfast position in undergraduate research methodology courses.<\/p>\n<p>However, for nearly eighty years, there had been no one to verify the assertion against the original factory documents.<\/p>\n<p>The economists who sought the raw data<\/p>\n<p>This situation changed with a paper by economists Steven Levitt and John List, titled \u201cWas There Really a Hawthorne Effect at the Hawthorne Plant? An Analysis of the Original Illumination Experiments,\u201d which was initially disseminated as NBER Working Paper 15016 in 2009 and later published in the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics in January 2011. The two economists had assumed, like the majority who reference the Hawthorne effect, that the original data from the illumination experiments had vanished. It was ultimately found on microfilm at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and in Harvard\u2019s Baker Library, mostly overlooked since the experiments occurred between 1924 and 1927.<\/p>\n<p>Access to these records allowed Levitt and List to perform an analysis that seemingly had not been done comprehensively before: they compared the actual daily output figures from the relay-assembly areas against the actual dates of each lighting adjustment, rather than relying on the summarized, second-hand accounts of the study that had been transmitted through generations of textbooks. The relay experiments engaged small groups of women assembling telephone relays over several years, logging output day by day while plant engineers experimented with various combinations of brighter and dimmer lighting, sometimes alongside other modifications to breaks and work hours in related studies at the same plant.<\/p>\n<p>This meticulous record-keeping is precisely why the foundational data was deemed valuable to retrieve.<\/p>\n<p>What the original records reveal<\/p>\n<p>According to the paper, the familiar version of the narrative does not hold up. In Levitt and List\u2019s words, there is \u201clittle evidence of the type of Hawthorne effect widely attributed to these data when one subjects them to careful analysis.\u201d The striking pattern generally described, with output increasing each time the lighting shifted, whether brighter or dimmer, as if the workers were reacting to simply being observed, is not distinctly present in the actual figures.<\/p>\n<p>One specific discovery is noteworthy. The researchers found a clear day-of-week pattern: output was, in fact, lower on Mondays and Saturdays compared to other weekdays, rising as the working week progressed, independent of any lighting changes. Given that every lighting adjustment was made on a Monday, the slight recovery from the week\u2019s low could appear, at first glance, to be a lighting-induced spike\u2014when it was simply the plant&#8217;s usual weekly cycle.<\/p>\n<p>However, the re-examination did not yield no results. The paper also notes a few subtler, more limited patterns: productivity in the experimental groups tended to be slightly higher than in the rest of the plant over the long haul, output was somewhat greater on days when active experimentation was occurring, and workers seemed to react more to artificial changes in lighting than to natural variations in daylight. Levitt and List characterize these as indicators of a more subtle form of observation effect, differing from the clean, striking pattern that textbooks typically portray.<\/p>\n<p>A more nuanced conclusion than \u201cthe effect is a myth\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It might be tempting to distill this as a debunking, and some reporting at the time did just that. However, such an interpretation exaggerates what the paper presents. Levitt and List are not asserting that individuals never alter their behavior when they know they are being watched. They contend that this specific, well-known dataset, which gave rise to the term, does not unequivocally showcase the effect in the narrative usually recounted. The original illumination experiments were also small and methodologically lax by contemporary standards, conducted on a limited number of workers over a few years without a formal control group as would be required in modern studies, which constrains what any re-assessment, in either direction, can conclusively determine.<\/p>\n<p>The paper was not created in isolation either. An earlier analysis in 1992 by economist S.R.G.
