Others were already preserved on land, stored in collections, and awaiting the right expert to identify them.<\/p>\n<p>From 1 April 2025 to 31 March 2026, the Ocean Census network recorded 1,121 marine species it regarded as previously unrecognized by science. In its <a href=\"https:\/\/oceancensus.org\/press-release-scientists-discover-over-1100-new-marine-species-in-landmark-ocean-census\/\">announcement on 19 May 2026<\/a>, the programme stated that this figure represented a 54 per cent increase over the typical annual rate of marine identification.<\/p>\n<p>The total is remarkable, but the system that produced it provides more significant insights. It did not result from a single vessel returning with 1,121 new organisms. Instead, it came from 13 expeditions, nine specialised workshops, targeted funding, museum and laboratory backlogs, and a collaborative network of 1,433 scientists across 660 institutions in 85 countries.<\/p>\n<p>This effort also hinges on a distinction that Ocean Census considers essential to its mission. A species can be entered into its open database as \u201cdiscovered\u201d prior to receiving an official scientific name in a peer-reviewed taxonomic description.<\/p>\n<p>This means that 1,121 is a reflection of a discovery pipeline, rather than a collection of 1,121 completed nomenclatural documents.<\/p>\n<h2>A census compiled both at sea and on land<\/h2>\n<p>The programme\u2019s third year spanned from April 2025 to March 2026. Its expeditions covered remote deep ocean areas, volcanic seamounts, tropical reefs, and coastal caves. Specimens were gathered by divers, research vessels, remotely operated devices, and crewed submersibles.<\/p>\n<p>Collection was merely the initial step. Species Discovery Workshops convened specialists with microscopes, imaging systems, genetic tools, and access to reference materials. Grants facilitated the less visible work of preparing specimens, exploring collections, comparing older descriptions, and developing suspects into documented candidates.<\/p>\n<p>Ocean Census announced that its Species Discovery Awards contributed to uncovering 728 previously unknown species from recent expeditions and legacy backlogs. This accounts for nearly two-thirds of the total for the year.<\/p>\n<p>The phrasing is important. It does not imply that each of those 728 specimens had been left unnoticed in a museum drawer. Instead, it indicates that much of the output relied on funded taxonomic efforts conducted after the specimens were collected, regardless of whether the material was recent or historical.<\/p>\n<p>The unknown ocean is therefore not solely found by venturing further. Some of it already resides in jars, freezers, and specimen cabinets, separated from a name by limited expertise and time.<\/p>\n<h2>Finding an organism does not equate to finding a species<\/h2>\n<p>A camera can capture an unfamiliar creature in moments. Establishing that it represents a new species is more challenging.<\/p>\n<p>A taxonomist must eliminate known alternatives. Variations can arise due to sex, age, diet, injury, preservation, geography, or regular variation within a single species. A juvenile may appear different from an adult. A damaged deep-sea specimen might lack the precise structure necessary for identification.<\/p>\n<p>The researcher may need to dissect the organism, inspect minute structures, sequence DNA, and compare it with specimens stored in various countries. Earlier scientific descriptions may be brief, illustrated inadequately, or cataloged under names that have since changed.<\/p>\n<p>ScienceBlog&#8217;s previous analysis found that <a href=\"https:\/\/scienceblog.com\/t-deep-seafloor-visual-001-percent-1000-vehicles-100000-years\/\">less than 0.001 per cent of the deep seafloor has been visually documented<\/a>. This minuscule and geographically skewed record helps clarify why each retrieved specimen holds such significance, and why no expedition can render the discovery process fully representative on its own.<\/p>\n<p>Ocean Census is striving to transform that laborious one-species route into a collaborative framework without pretending that the rigorous comparisons have vanished.<\/p>\n<h2>\u201cDiscovered\u201d and \u201cdescribed\u201d signify different thresholds<\/h2>\n<p>According to the programme\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/oceancensus.org\/how-the-census-works\/faqs\/\">published NOVA criteria<\/a>, a species can be classified as discovered when experts conclude from morphology, ecological context, and, when necessary, genetic evidence, that it is new to science.<\/p>\n<p>A submission must include a unique specimen identifier, a temporary name, collection coordinates and depth, at least one full-specimen image, and taxonomic annotations justifying why the organism is distinct. The principal specimen needs to be traceable to a collection.<\/p>\n<p>Formal description follows later. It typically necessitates a published diagnosis or description, a valid scientific name, and a holotype deposited in an accredited museum or taxonomic archive.
