It remained there for approximately 8,500 years. Archaeologists conducting surveys prior to a solar farm installation in southeastern Monterey County discovered it, sent it for radiocarbon dating, and received a date that pushes the timeline of inland trade in California back several thousand years.<\/p>\n<p>What they uncovered was a small round bead crafted from the shell of a giant rock scallop, Crassadoma gigantea. Barry A. Price, Simone M. Schinsing, and Jasmine B. Kidwell published the dating findings in a paper in California Archaeology, which dates the Turkey Flat bead to a median calibrated age of 8,508 years before present. No earlier example of this round form has been documented.<\/p>\n<p>## Why the shell was considered valuable<\/p>\n<p>Giant rock scallops are not easily obtained. They grow beneath the tideline, firmly attached to rock surfaces, so retrieving one requires diving. Then comes the challenging part. The shell is thick and resilient, and shaping or drilling it demands significant effort for a single small ornament.<\/p>\n<p>The difficulty was part of its allure.<\/p>\n<p>Among the Chumash and their coastal neighbors, ornaments made from this shell indicated social status precisely because they were difficult to source and even harder to refine. A bead like this signified access, patience, and skill in one small object that could be worn around the neck.<\/p>\n<p>## The challenge of distance<\/p>\n<p>Turkey Flat is located over 42 miles, approximately 68 kilometers, from the nearest coast. Giant rock scallops do not appear in rivers, lakes, or arid grasslands; therefore, it arrived there because someone transported it, which is where the mystery begins.<\/p>\n<p>Chemical analysis provided further insights. A shell captures the characteristics of the water it matured in, and different coastal areas leave slightly varied signatures, resulting in a rough geological fingerprint. For the Turkey Flat bead, that fingerprint pointed southward, toward the Santa Barbara Channel and the Channel Islands, far from the closest coastline.<\/p>\n<p>Price, an archaeologist at Applied EarthWorks, informed Phys.org that there was a reasonable possibility the beads were crafted on the Channel Islands and transported north via trade routes spanning hundreds of miles. He also proposed a simpler scenario where someone from the islands or the Santa Barbara coast simply walked north wearing one. The exact path cannot be reconstructed now. Regardless, the bead traveled a significant distance from the creature that provided its shell.<\/p>\n<p>## A second bead, five thousand years later<\/p>\n<p>The same excavation initiative yielded a disc bead at the adjacent Lichtenstein site, dated to 3,674 years before present. Two ornaments, one species, one section of interior California, separated by nearly five millennia.<\/p>\n<p>As noted by Archaeology Magazine in its coverage, this interval suggests a bead-making and bead-trading tradition lasting more than 5,000 years. Longer than most empires endure. No records were kept, and the evidence endures as two pieces of polished shell.<\/p>\n<p>## What one date can and cannot indicate<\/p>\n<p>This is a single paper detailing two directly dated beads, and it should be interpreted as such. Two dates do not verify a continuous route existed from the islands to the interior for eight millennia, and the researchers are cautious about differentiating between what the shells confirm and what they merely imply.<\/p>\n<p>The dates do enhance a narrative that was already developing. Prior research by Todd Braje, Torben Rick, and Jon Erlandson, published in the journal Radiocarbon in 2008, applied the same dating technique to scallop ornaments from San Miguel Island. That study extended the use of this species for personal decoration back to at least 8,000 years ago, well beyond the previously assumed thousand-year window. The Monterey County beads take this same antiquity and relocate it entirely off the coast.<\/p>\n<p>Price himself dismissed the record-setting date as the lesser news. What he finds more significant is the picture it suggests: communities inhabiting this region of California in an organized, continuous manner as long as 10,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>## Found prior to construction<\/p>\n<p>The beads were discovered during survey work conducted between 2012 and 2020 ahead of the California Flats Solar Project, a 280-megawatt array built on Hearst ranch land in the far southeast of the county, as detailed in Capital Dynamics and First Solar\u2019s commissioning announcement. Major infrastructure projects in California must be surveyed for archaeological remains prior to construction, which is how much of the state&#8217;s prehistory has been uncovered.<\/p>\n<p>Representatives from Salinan, Northern Chumash, and Yokuts were involved throughout the process and authorized the beads to be directly dated.
