The champion was determined by who had the highest kill count. This event was known as the side hunt and was a cherished holiday custom.<\/p>\n<p>Frank M. Chapman, an ornithologist and an early advocate in the emerging Audubon movement, envisioned a different approach. On Christmas Day in 1900, he suggested a \u201cChristmas Bird Census\u201d: rather than shooting birds, participants would count them. This inaugural count attracted 27 bird enthusiasts who conducted 25 counts in locations ranging from Toronto to Pacific Grove, California, recording around 90 species collectively.<\/p>\n<p>The practice took hold. It has been carried out every winter since, making it, as far as can be determined, the oldest ongoing count of its type.<\/p>\n<p>The evolution of a winter tradition into a dataset<\/p>\n<p>The framework has remained straightforward. Each count takes place within a 15-mile-wide circle, supervised by a volunteer who coordinates all participants, with a fixed time frame from December 14 to January 5. Conducting this in one location for several years yields a local record. Extending it across a continent for twelve decades results in something that no funding could ever deliberately create.<\/p>\n<p>No one in 1900 aimed to establish a climate baseline. They were seeking a more pleasant way to celebrate the holiday. However, as the count continued annually, in largely the same locations and times, it gradually became one of the longest environmental records available. Dr. Janet Ng, a wildlife biologist at Environment and Climate Change Canada, clarified its significance by stating it is \u201cthe longest in the world, commencing from 1900, there\u2019s nothing else comparable that exists\u201d amongst community bird counts.<\/p>\n<p>The current scale is difficult to envision. The 126th count, occurring in the 2025\u201326 season, extended across over 2,800 circles from Canada to Chile. Dr. Elizabeth Gray, CEO of the National Audubon Society, remarked that it is \u201cone of our most vital traditions and a wonderful opportunity for people to unite for conservation.\u201d That perspective, focusing on gathering rather than measuring, is essential to keep in mind, as the participants primarily see themselves as birdwatchers enjoying a winter stroll, not as data gatherers.<\/p>\n<p>What the 126 winters reveal<\/p>\n<p>The data generated by these winter excursions has contributed to legitimate scientific research. Audubon states that the records have been referenced in more than 300 peer-reviewed studies. Two recurring themes emerge.<\/p>\n<p>The first is migration. Geoff LeBaron, who oversees the count for Audubon, has indicated that \u201cthere is a northward movement of many of the more southern species.\u201d An Audubon analysis spanning forty years of count data revealed that 58 percent of 305 common wintering species have shifted notably north since 1968, some by hundreds of kilometers. Scientists involved with the count have witnessed some ranges migrating north by as much as 200 miles.<\/p>\n<p>The second theme is more concerning. The count contributed to several monitoring networks that informed the 2019 study published in Science by Ken Rosenberg and colleagues, which estimated that North America has experienced a loss of about 29 percent of its bird population since 1970, equating to nearly 3 billion birds over about five decades. Rosenberg summarized it as \u201cMultiple, independent lines of evidence indicate a significant decline in the abundance of birds.\u201d What made this study impactful was where the declines occurred. He noted that \u201cFor the first time, the findings also revealed widespread losses among common birds in all habitats, including backyard species.\u201d It is not limited to just the rare and specialized types. The common sparrows outside your window. The study also included an important disclaimer: several groups, such as raptors and wetland birds, saw an increase. Thus, this represents a net decline, not a universal drop across all species.<\/p>\n<p>Why birdwatchers continue to be invaluable<\/p>\n<p>One might assume that a century-old tradition would have been overtaken by satellites and automated sensors by now. However, that has not occurred, for a mundane yet valid reason: the count continues to yield useful data because regular individuals persist in participating in the cold.<\/p>\n<p>Those managing it are candid about its limitations. Participation fluctuates, the hours spent in the field vary, skill levels differ, and the circles have never been established randomly. This is not a laboratory. It\u2019s a loosely standardized census executed by whoever comes.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, it remains effective, mainly due to its longevity. Random fluctuations that could undermine a five-year study tend to balance out over a century of winters. The count doesn\u2019t require any single day to achieve perfection; it needs to continue, and it has. The significance lies not in the precision of one circle on one morning but in the consistency.<\/p>\n<p>There is much to appreciate in that.
