According to Decanter<\/a>, they marked the trucks with \u201cwine not compliant\u201d before letting the drivers go. The wine that was spilled originated from Spain, en route to being repackaged as French.<\/p>\n

A wine superpower that purchases wine<\/h2>\n

Even though France is a leading wine producer, it imported 6.1 million hectoliters of wine in 2022, positioning it as the fourth-largest wine importer, according to Hillebrand Gori<\/a>. The majority of these imports came in bulk, mostly from Spain, which leads the low-cost bulk wine sector. French imports of still wine reached 905 million euros in 2024.<\/p>\n

What forty-seven cents can buy<\/h2>\n

The average cost of Spanish bulk wine, lacking a geographical indication, was 47 euro cents per liter in 2024, as reported by Agronews Castilla y Le\u00f3n<\/a>. American wine economist Mike Veseth notes a substantial increase in price once bottled in France, with a retail price nearing 5 euros per bottle.<\/p>\n

This price difference highlights intrinsic market conditions. French wine exported in the initial half of 2024 was priced at 8.99 USD per liter, while Spanish wine was at 1.50 USD, according to Vinetur<\/a>. France benefits from its esteemed reputation, whereas Spain is well-positioned due to volume and cost-effectiveness, particularly within the lower market segments.<\/p>\n

Why Spain excels on pricing<\/h2>\n

Spain’s advantage comes from scale. Castilla-La Mancha, the world’s largest wine-producing area, constitutes nearly half of Spain\u2019s vineyard space. In the 2024\/25 season, Spanish red wine was traded at approximately 43.57 euros per hectoliter, or under 44 cents per liter at the farm gate, per Wine-Intelligence<\/a>. In 2024, bulk wine accounted for 55% of Spain’s exports, with Germany overtaking France as the leading buyer.<\/p>\n

Reasons the tankers continue to be emptied<\/h2>\n

Such protests are not unique occurrences. In October 2023, approximately 380 growers obstructed a highway in protest against setbacks like poor yields, inflation, and unsustainable prices, leading to the destruction of wine tankers and other products, as detailed by Wine Spectator<\/a>. The Comit\u00e9 R\u00e9gional d\u2019Action Viticole has a history of militant actions, targeting foreign tankers in the Languedoc region. Spain has submitted official complaints, alleging violations of single market regulations.<\/p>\n

France is investing to reduce production<\/h2>\n

With a decline in local wine consumption\u2014from 120 liters per capita each year in the 1960s to roughly 40 liters currently, according to Euronews<\/a>\u2014the French government has initiated funding for vine removal. In 2024, 5,418 vineyard owners removed 27,461 hectares of vines with a financial aid of 109.8 million euros, with plans for a 130 million euro permanent initiative by the agricultural ministry, based on information from the drinks business<\/a>.<\/p>\n
