This led to one of the longest uninterrupted accounts of a natural phenomenon, stretching from the imperial court of the ninth century to contemporary times. The documentation, originating in 812 CE, includes meticulous notes made during hanami festivities by Japan\u2019s nobility, capturing peak bloom periods without the aim of scientific inquiry. It evolved into a dataset thanks to Yasuyuki Aono from Osaka Prefecture University, who gathered these historical notes covering 732 years from 812 to 2005.<\/p>\n<p>By analyzing journals and historical records, Aono successfully connected bloom dates with Kyoto\u2019s March temperatures based on historical evidence. The timing of cherry blossoms is influenced by temperature variations, revealing environmental changes over the ages. Throughout much of the record&#8217;s duration, bloom peaks were noted in mid-April, exhibiting consistency from 812 to 1800. Significant early peaks were noted on March 27 in the years 1236, 1409, and 1612.<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, the cherry blossoms in Kyoto peaked on March 26, marking the earliest occurrence in over twelve centuries, attributed to a blend of a chilly January and a warm late February and March. Despite this single-day record, Aono warned against solely linking it to climate change, recognizing influences such as solar cycles and urban heat islands. Nevertheless, the overall pattern indicates a trend toward earlier blooms since the 1800s, in accordance with both climate warming and the impacts of urban growth.<\/p>\n<p>The Japan Meteorological Agency indicates that Kyoto\u2019s average temperature for March rose by two degrees Celsius from 1953 to 2020. Following Aono&#8217;s death in 2025, it will be the responsibility of future scholars to continue this precious climate documentation.
