Europe turned too frigid. Anatomically modern humans arrived equipped with superior tools. Two distinct types of humans encountered each other, and one triumphed over the other.<\/p>\n<p>All three narratives are appealingly straightforward. The archaeological evidence, however, tells a more complex story.<\/p>\n<p>A [2026 study in *Quaternary Science Reviews*](https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.quascirev.2026.109850) examines the issue from an alternative perspective. Rather than looking for a singular catastrophic event, a research team led by Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al archaeologist Ariane Burke investigated how habitable zones across Europe were organized, how this organization shifted due to climate changes, and whether isolated groups could realistically maintain connections.<\/p>\n<p>The findings are nuanced. The researchers did not observe a constant trend of climate erasing suitable Neanderthal habitats. Favorable areas withstood several cycles of cold and temperate conditions. However, suitable land offers little defense if the inhabitants are sparsely distributed and the next viable area is positioned too far away. In certain regions of Europe, the modeled Neanderthal network appeared delicate in this respect.<\/p>\n<p>In contrast, *Homo sapiens* exhibited a more interconnected array of potentially suitable environments. Such connections can serve as demographic safety nets, allowing small groups to share mates, knowledge, and resources, or to seek refuge when one area fails. The model implies that some Neanderthal groups lacked this safety net.<\/p>\n<p>## Transforming disparate sites into a landscape of potential lives<\/p>\n<p>The study spans the timeframe from approximately 60,000 to 33,700 years ago, encompassing ten frigid stadial and warmer interstadial periods of Marine Isotope Stage 3. Throughout this epoch, *Homo sapiens* established a significant presence in Europe, while Neanderthals vanished from the archaeological record.<\/p>\n<p>Burke and her team initiated their research using dated archaeological sites. They relied on Mousterian sites to indicate Neanderthal presence and Aurignacian sites to represent early *Homo sapiens*. These associations are not precise markers for distinct biological species, but they serve as the clearest available cultural indicators. The team opted to exclude more contentious traditions, such as the Ch\u00e2telperronian, Proto-Aurignacian, and Initial Upper Palaeolithic, instead of ambiguously attributing uncertain sites to a particular population.<\/p>\n<p>Climate simulations provided data on temperature, precipitation, and climate variability metrics. Topography and slope information were incorporated to characterize the landscape. The initially coarse climate data were statistically refined to create a grid of approximately 15 by 15 kilometers.<\/p>\n<p>From this foundation, the researchers developed four habitat-suitability models for Neanderthals and *Homo sapiens* in both cold and mild scenarios. They utilized a machine-learning technique known as Random Forest, averaging over 100 iterations, to identify locations where the environmental combination paralleled that of established sites.<\/p>\n<p>Then they took an atypical measure. Drawing upon ethnographic estimates for nomadic hunter-gatherers, the team searched for extensive areas that could sustain regional groups of about 175 to 570 individuals. After evaluating scenarios with five, ten, 15, and 20 regions, they chose a ten-region configuration to analyze the shape and interconnectedness of the potential networks for both populations.<\/p>\n<p>This is where precise language becomes crucial. The study did not uncover a tangible Neanderthal social network. It did not retrieve evidence of friendship bonds, marital paths, or travel routes between identified communities. Its connections relate to modeled habitat areas. They indicate where interactions between groups may have been facilitated or restricted based on occupancy of the most favorable locations.<\/p>\n<p>## The cold altered the refuge, but did not erase it<\/p>\n<p>Had climate alone been responsible for the Neanderthals&#8217; demise, we would anticipate the models to reveal a significant deterioration of their suitable habitat as Europe underwent glacial upheavals. That was not the outcome.<\/p>\n<p>Optimal habitats were retained for both groups during cold and mild periods, although their locations shifted. Southwestern Europe consistently emerged as a central area where populations could contract during harsh times and re-expand when conditions improved. Southern Iberia also emerged as a second notably resilient Neanderthal core.<\/p>\n<p>The authors interpret this persistence as an indication of spatial resilience. Climate remained significant. A shifting habitat can compel a group to migrate, extend travel paths, separate neighbors, and modify access to food or raw materials. Climate variability may also present more disruptions than mere average temperature changes. What the model questions is the assertion that cold fluctuations simply eliminated the places where Neanderthals could survive.<\/p>\n<p>This is an essential distinction because extinction can occur while habitable terrain persists. A region may offer food, water, and shelter yet still fail to sustain a population over time if communities become too diminutive, too isolated, or face continual misfortune.<\/p>\n<p>It also aligns with a less stereotyped understanding of Neanderthal adaptability.
