A recent pioneering study has identified remnants of sheeppox virus DNA within its folios, uncovering a historical account of this devastating disease affecting livestock.<\/p>\n<p>**The York Gospels and Historical Documents**<\/p>\n<p>Initially created in Canterbury, the York Gospels consist of a compilation of animal skins referred to as parchment. Scientific examination of three pages showed the existence of sheeppox virus DNA\u2014two from the initial manuscript and one from a subsequent insertion. Further scrutiny of other historical records, such as a Latin glossary from around 800, a version of the Epistles of St Paul from a century prior, and fragments from a fifteenth-century collection, revealed similar results. Altogether, 17 positive samples emerged from sources across Britain, the Upper Rhine, Austria, and France, including one paper sheet.<\/p>\n<p>**Sheeppox: A Dangerous Disease for Livestock**<\/p>\n<p>Sheeppox, a severe illness affecting sheep, is caused by a double-stranded DNA virus analogous to smallpox. This virus significantly reduces milk, wool, and meat yields and damages the hides of affected animals. The sheeppox virus has a lengthy history, with references from the first-century Roman author Columella and later medieval European texts mentioning outbreaks. Although it has been eradicated in Europe over the last century, it still poses risks, with recent cases reported in Greece.<\/p>\n<p>**Analyzing Manuscripts for Viral DNA**<\/p>\n<p>The research utilized an innovative technique to extract DNA from parchment delicately, avoiding damage. Conservators carefully rubbed the manuscript pages with erasers to gather residue containing DNA from both the animal\u2019s skin and any pathogens present. The research team examined 754 samples, isolating 41 with sufficient capripoxvirus DNA for thorough analysis. Most genomes were found to be sheeppox rather than its related viruses, goatpox, and lumpy skin disease. This diligent effort revealed 21 new viral genomes, marking the oldest examples ever discovered.<\/p>\n<p>**Understanding Parchment Production and Virus Transmission**<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, 10 of the 17 positive pages were composed of calfskin, contrary to the anticipated sheepskin. The processing of parchment typically included soaking skins in lime pits, where viral particles might endure and spread between hides.<\/p>\n<p>**Historical Perspective and Genetic Changes**<\/p>\n<p>Sheeppox DNA was found not just in manuscripts but also in ancient sheep teeth from the Eurasian steppe, dating as far back as 1875-1645 BC. This indicates the virus&#8217;s enduring influence on livestock management practices. Notably, the sheeppox virus genome has largely remained stable since the Bronze Age, in contrast to the rapidly changing smallpox virus. This consistency implies that the virus may have adapted to its sheep hosts thousands of years ago.<\/p>\n<p>**Future Avenues and Consequences for Animal Health**<\/p>\n<p>This study underscores the potential of libraries and archives as reservoirs of ancient animal illnesses, using parchment as a lens to explore historical pathogen interactions. Researchers are now seeking ancient genomes of goatpox and lumpy skin disease, which may be concealed in medieval texts.
