Typically, sulfur is a byproduct of oil and gas refining, but this new technique offers a sustainable alternative, decreasing reliance on fossil fuel extraction. Sulfur is essential for manufacturing sulfuric acid, which is utilized in numerous industrial applications such as fertilizers and metal extraction.<\/p>\n<p>The method, developed by Hao-Yi Cheng&#8217;s team at the Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen, employs ferrihydrite as a catalyst to transform sulfides into elemental sulfur and iron sulfides. When exposed to air, iron sulfides return to ferrihydrite, boosting the sulfur yield. This technique is efficient and can adapt to complex wastewater mixes, capable of processing up to 100kg of sulfur per ton of wastewater each day. It has been trialed on industrial wastewater from electronics and petroleum sectors, where conventional biological techniques encounter difficulties due to the toxicity of hydrogen sulfide.<\/p>\n<p>The financial outlook appears bright, with anticipated profits surpassing $1000 per ton of sulfur at existing market rates, emphasizing the economic and ecological benefits of this approach. Future plans focus on scaling the technology through collaborations with industry, although hurdles remain in maintaining process reliability and the quality of sulfur particles.
