His journey occurred in a 100-square-foot habitat situated 22 feet beneath a Key Largo lagoon. This habitat, Jules’ Undersea Lodge, is kept at an air pressure of 1.6 times that of the surface, contrasting with submarines that maintain standard atmospheric pressure.

Individuals in such settings could experience minor height reductions due to the continuous pressure exerted from all sides. Dituri concluded the mission at over 72 inches tall, down from 73 inches. This change in height, however, does not seem connected to daily variations in height seen due to gravity, which typically resolve after sufficient rest.

While underwater conditions did not conform to usual spinal compression patterns, Dituri observed health advantages like diminished stress and enhanced sleep. Notably, tests indicated increased telomere length and stem cell counts, although such findings warrant careful consideration due to the limited sample size and absence of a control group.

Curiously, astronauts typically experience height increases in microgravity, presenting a contrasting effect observed during prolonged space flights, as their spines extend in the absence of Earth’s gravitational force.

Interestingly, Rüdiger Koch later exceeded Dituri’s underwater duration, spending 120 days in a Panama SeaPod and establishing a new Guinness World Record. His stay involved comparable isolation and conditions, though no specific information regarding height change has been recorded from his mission.

Whether prolonged hyperbaric environments consistently result in stature changes remains an unresolved question, as Dituri’s experience currently represents a distinct instance in underwater living.

Joseph Dituri, an associate professor at the University of South Florida and a former US Navy saturation diving officer, surfaced from a 100-day underwater expedition slightly shorter than when he started.
