The city set a target for a 30% tree canopy by 2030, which has now been extended to 2040. This postponement, initially perceived as a setback, is actually a hastened timeline from what was feasible\u20142055 or later\u2014given current growth rates.<\/p>\n<p>As of 2021, New York City\u2019s tree canopy encompassed 23.4% of the land, leaving a gap of nearly 7 percentage points from the target. The objective, established under Local Law 148 of 2023, is now included in the Urban Forest Plan, which transitions the focus from planting new trees to preserving existing ones. This is vital because canopy growth depends more on mature trees than newly planted ones. NYC Parks faces maintenance challenges, pruning only 54,000 out of a 65,000 tree target annually, highlighting a capacity issue.<\/p>\n<p>The city\u2019s strategy to meet its goal by 2040 necessitates the addition of approximately 700 acres of canopy each year for 14 years. This poses a significant challenge considering that the 1.2% increase from 2017 to 2021 primarily stems from existing trees growing larger.<\/p>\n<p>Equity also matters, as current canopy coverage differs by borough\u2014from 33.4% in Staten Island to 19.5% in Manhattan and Brooklyn. For success, the city must tackle maintenance backlogs, staff shortages, and ensure that private properties, which support a third of the canopy, retain their trees.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, success will hinge on consistent canopy growth, rather than merely planting numbers. Without ongoing maintenance and solid plans, long-term success remains uncertain. If the plan remains on track, extending the deadline could be advantageous, but neglect would mean little advancement by 2040.
