Some owners spoke to their dogs, others caressed them, while a few simply maintained eye contact and allowed that to suffice. Urine samples were collected before and after, due to the fact that the substance being analyzed exits the body that way. The results, published in *Science* by Miho Nagasawa and team, indicated something more akin to a circuit rather than a simple cuddle.<\/p>\n<p>## A hormone with a daily role<\/p>\n<p>Oxytocin is marketed as a love potion, which diminishes its extensive responsibilities. It facilitates contractions during childbirth and the release of milk during nursing, and in humans, it closely correlates with the behaviors of new parents. A review co-authored by the same Azabu University group, including Kazutaka Mogi and Takefumi Kikusui, highlights studies showing that mothers with elevated circulating levels engage in longer gazes, touch their babies more tenderly, and check on them more frequently. Levels of both parent and infant fluctuate in tandem during play, and the bond strengthens when the two are well aligned.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the hormone is already associated with the oldest connection known to humans. The inquiry posed by the Japanese team was whether a completely different species had discovered a way in.<\/p>\n<p>## How the connection was assessed<\/p>\n<p>In the initial experiment, dogs were categorized based on the duration of their gaze at their owners. Among the pairs that exchanged prolonged looks, owner levels increased sharply, and the dogs&#8217; levels also rose, albeit more gradually. In instances of short eye contact, there was minimal change.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the aspect that made the finding challenging to dismiss. In a second experiment, researchers administered a nasal dose of oxytocin to dogs, leading the female dogs to spend more time gazing at their owners, whose levels subsequently increased in response. Introducing the hormone at the dog end resulted in a response at the human end, linked solely by a look. Writing in the same edition, Evan MacLean and Brian Hare stated that dogs had commandeered the human bonding mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>## Eleven wolves in a room<\/p>\n<p>The comparison group provided the study its impact. Eleven hand-reared wolves underwent the same process with their owners, who fed and interacted with them daily. These were not wild creatures pulled from the woods. They simply did not maintain their owners\u2019 gaze, and no hormonal reaction ensued.<\/p>\n<p>For a wolf, prolonged staring is interpreted as a challenge, not endearment. Nagasawa&#8217;s team viewed the difference as evidence that the gaze connection emerged during domestication, as dogs were chosen, intentionally or otherwise, for their tendency to look at humans.<\/p>\n<p>## The debates the paper sparked<\/p>\n<p>One article is just that, and this one received thoughtful critiques within a year.<\/p>\n<p>A commentary by Zolt\u00e1n Kekecs and co-authors at Baylor University noted that the headline comparison was based on 28 dogs and 11 wolves. At that sample size, they estimated, a genuine effect in the wolves would likely have gone unnoticed in most samples, making the lack of a connection inconclusive. By reformulating the statistical models with the original data, they found no significant difference between the two groups. To reliably identify a true difference, according to their simulations, around 44 wolves alongside an equal number of dogs would be required.<\/p>\n<p>Independently, Sylvain Fiset and Vickie Plourde challenged the analogy central to the interpretation. Human bonding of this nature is typically examined between a child and a caregiver. The dogs in the study were attached to their owners, which represents a different relationship dressed in similar attire.<\/p>\n<p>## Wolves get a second assessment<\/p>\n<p>Seven years later, a Stockholm University ethologist approached the foundational question from a different perspective. Christina Hansen Wheat and colleagues hand-reared wolf and dog pups from ten days old under the same conditions, then subjected them to the Strange Situation Test. This protocol is designed to assess attachment in human infants, functioning by having a familiar person and a stranger alternately enter a room.<\/p>\n<p>The wolves responded similarly to the dogs: both distinguished the familiar person from the stranger with ease. The wolves, however, displayed evident signs of stress and paced the room, with the pacing ceasing once their caretaker returned. As Hansen Wheat articulated, the known human served as a stress mitigator. If wolves can already exhibit some of this behavior, their attachment to humans may have been foundational for domestication rather than a consequence of it.<\/p>\n<p>Not everyone was persuaded. M\u00e1rta G\u00e1csi, \u00c1d\u00e1m Mikl\u00f3si, and J\u00f3zsef Top\u00e1l contended that the test deviated too significantly from the original framework for the results to be compared with previous research. A few behavioral preferences, they asserted, fall short of confirming an attachment system.<\/p>\n<p>None of which affects the dog on the floor, still gazing.
