This is unusual, approaching a record for the latest forming hurricane, historically established on September 11 in 2002 and 2013. An average season typically yields 14 named storms, encompassing seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes. As of peak season 2026, the activity remains significantly low.<\/p>\n<p>The calm start is primarily attributable to El Ni\u00f1o, which has heightened wind shear in the Atlantic, impeding storm formation. Wind shear, the fluctuation in wind speed and direction at varying altitudes, hinders storms from developing. This year&#8217;s shear levels are unprecedented since record-keeping began in 1979. Concurrently, the Eastern Pacific, where El Ni\u00f1o encourages storm activity, has seen a busier season.<\/p>\n<p>The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) anticipated a below-normal season with a 55% probability in May, which was later updated to 75% with diminished projections for named storms and hurricanes. Nonetheless, such predictions pertain to overall basin activity, not individual storm formations or trajectories.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a sluggish start, peak hurricane season occurs from late August to early October. The potential for storm formation persists, necessitating sustained vigilance. As Ken Graham from the National Weather Service pointed out, even a single storm can shift a mild season into a catastrophic one. NOAA&#8217;s acting administrator Neil Jacobs reiterated that severe storms can strike even during less active years.<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, it is essential to interpret a below-normal forecast with caution. A limited number of storms does not imply safety for particular regions, and preparedness is crucial regardless of seasonal predictions.
