By the monitoring season of 2024, that count had surged to 3,086.<\/p>\n<p>This resurgence is recognized as one of the fastest wildlife recoveries recorded, as stated by the U.S. Department of the Interior in August 2016. They revealed that three subspecies of island fox had sufficiently recovered to be taken off the endangered species list, achieving the fastest recovery of any mammal under the Endangered Species Act. The 2025 status report from Friends of the Island Fox details the current condition of the islands.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, the island fox, a petite canid exclusive to these islands, encountered a significant population decline. Predation by golden eagles, which appeared after the native bald eagles were wiped out due to DDT contamination, devastated fox populations. These golden eagles depended on feral pigs for nourishment but also hunted the foxes. The island&#8217;s seclusion, which facilitated the fox&#8217;s distinct existence, concurrently heightened the extinction risk. On Santa Catalina Island, the population was affected separately by an outbreak of canine distemper, illustrating the various threats confronting the species.<\/p>\n<p>The recovery strategy focused on the ecosystem rather than solely on the foxes. The eradication of the pigs removed the golden eagle&#8217;s primary food source, thus prompting their relocation. Additionally, 61 bald eagles were reintroduced to restore ecological balance, and captive breeding programs released 226 foxes back into their habitat, alongside a vaccination initiative to avert disease outbreaks.<\/p>\n<p>By 2016, the federal status of the San Miguel, Santa Rosa, and Santa Cruz subspecies was changed from endangered to recovered, with Santa Catalina\u2019s subspecies downlisted to threatened. Ongoing monitoring exhibited stable growth across most islands until 2024 when some fluctuations, ascribed to natural density adjustments, were noted. Nonetheless, worries persist for San Clemente Island, where a third consecutive year of population decline was reported without a determined cause, emphasizing the necessity for continued monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>The revival on Santa Cruz Island serves as a demonstration of effective intervention: from merely 55 foxes, the strategic relocation of 44 eagles, and the removal of over 5,000 pigs propelled the fox population to over 3,000.
