Przewalski&#8217;s horses, a species once on the verge of extinction and absent from the wild for many years, discovered a new habitat in this uninhabited terrain. By 2018, their numbers had surged nearly five times to around 150 in the Ukrainian section of the zone, as reported by The Conversation and confirmed in a study published in Theriologia Ukrainica.<\/p>\n<p>The initial batch of thirty-one comprised ten stallions and eighteen mares sourced from Askania Nova, a Ukrainian sanctuary, alongside three males from zoos. Despite some early losses caused by the stress of moving, the population quickly recovered. However, by the mid-2000s, illegal hunting drastically diminished their numbers, highlighting the continuous danger that humans pose concerning environmental threats like radiation.<\/p>\n<p>A census conducted in 2018 identified 137 horses in Ukraine, plus at least four additional individuals in Belarus. The horses successfully adjusted and established natural social structures resembling those typical of wild groups, including harems and bachelor bands. Notably, camera traps documented these steppe-dwelling animals utilizing wooded areas and derelict structures for refuge, indicating an unexpected level of ecological adaptability.<\/p>\n<p>Although the rise in population might imply that radiation poses little threat, the evidence emphasizes how alleviating human pressures such as hunting can positively impact wildlife. It remains ambiguous how low-level radiation influences the health and lifespan of individual horses. Given that the global population of Przewalski\u2019s horses is still limited, the Chernobyl herd is vital for the conservation of the species, despite facing challenges related to its size.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2018, factors including wildfires and regional conflicts have hindered additional systematic population assessments, leaving current figures uncertain.
