Prior to the publication of a research article in a journal, it can be made freely accessible for anyone to read. This can be done on your personal website, or alternatively, on a preprint server like psyarxiv.com<\/a>, where other researchers share their preprints as well, supported by the OSF<\/a>, ensuring its longevity, and facilitating the discovery of others\u2019 research.<\/p>\n

Preprint servers have been utilized in physics for decades and are now gaining traction across various academic fields. Preprints enable swift dissemination of your research, which is particularly vital for early career researchers. Preprints are citable, and indexing platforms such as Google Scholar will link your preprint citations to your eventual journal publication record.<\/p>\n

Preprints also allow for the review of work (and identification of errors) prior to its final publication.<\/p>\n

What occurs when my paper is published?<\/b><\/p>\n

Your work remains accessible in preprint form, meaning there is a free version available, leading to increased readership and citations. If you upload a version of the manuscript post-acceptance for publication, it is referred to as a post-print.<\/p>\n

What about copyright?<\/b><\/p>\n

Generally, journals possess the formatted, typeset version of your published manuscript. This is why you are often prohibited from uploading the PDF to your own website or a preprint server; however, nothing prevents you from uploading a version with identical text (the formatting may differ, but the information remains unchanged).<\/p>\n

Will journals reject my paper if it has already been \u201cpublished\u201d as a preprint?<\/b><\/p>\n

Most journals<\/a> permit or even advocate for preprints. A declining minority do not. If you are interested, you can look up specific journal policies here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Am I at risk of being scooped?<\/b><\/p>\n

Preprints enable you to timestamp your research before publication, thus providing a means to establish priority on findings, serving as a safeguard against being scooped. However, if your project requires confidentiality until publication, preprints may not be advisable.<\/p>\n

When is the right time to upload a preprint?<\/b><\/p>\n

Upload a preprint at the time of submission to a journal, and for each subsequent submission and upon acceptance (making it a postprint).<\/p>\n

What prevents people from uploading poor-quality work to a preprint server?<\/b><\/p>\n

There\u2019s nothing that prohibits this, but since a scholar’s reputation for producing quality work is one of their most critical assets, I do not recommend it.<\/p>\n
