The removals sparked controversy as European water policy typically favored dams as indicators of modernization. Both dams were managed by Electricit\u00e9 de France, and their licenses were not renewed under the Plan Loire Grandeur Nature, a strategy shifting towards ecological restoration over dam construction.<\/p>\n
The swift ecological recovery following the removals astonished many. The Allier witnessed salmon spawning upstream almost immediately. On the Vienne, fish populations thrived, with thousands of sea lamprey and shad, alongside a gradual rise in Atlantic salmon numbers.<\/p>\n
The Loire basin, extending over 1,000 kilometers and about a fifth of France, now features vast areas devoid of major dams, especially along its middle and lower sections. This stands in contrast to other European rivers, which have been extensively altered by dams.<\/p>\n
These French dam removals demonstrated that reopening rivers could quickly restore ecological harmony. The subsequent two decades revealed that fish populations rebound, and riverbeds recover their natural forms.
