The Pandemonium model is most famously recognized through some exceptionally distinctive illustrations by Leanne Hinton featured in Lindsey & Norman’s 1977 introductory psychology textbook ‘Human Information Processing’. Here’s one:

An internet user remarked that the illustrations represent ‘an effort to elucidate the intricacies of Parallel Distributed Processing using the framework of a child’s nightmare.‘, yet I have a fonder view of them – the demons appear amiable to me. Selfridge authored four children’s books (I’m unaware of who illustrated them), had three spouses and contributed to uncovering the narrative of National Security Agency surveillance as part of the Echelon program. While the Pandemonium model is broadly recognized, and frequently linked to these illustrations, the illustrator’s name, Leanne Hinton, is often overlooked.

I attempted to reach out to her to gather her perspective on the matter, and although I pinpointed Leanne Hinton, Professor Emerita of Linguistics, as the probable illustrator, she did not respond to my email, so I was unable to verify this was her or obtain permission to showcase the cartoons on this blog.
