You can do this on your personal website, or alternatively, you may use a preprint server like psyarxiv.com, where fellow researchers also post their preprints, backed by the OSF, ensuring its longevity, and facilitating the discovery of other researchers’ works.

For many years, preprint servers have been prevalent in the field of physics, but they are now gaining traction across other academic disciplines. Preprints enable swift sharing of your research, which is particularly crucial for researchers in the early stages of their careers. Preprints are citable, and services like Google Scholar will link citations of your preprint to the record of your subsequent journal publication.

Preprints also allow for the review of work (and the identification of errors) before the final publication takes place.

What occurs when my paper is published?

Your work remains accessible in preprint format, meaning there is a non-paywalled version, ensuring that a broader audience will engage with and cite it. If you upload a version of the manuscript after its acceptance for publication, this is referred to as a post-print.

What is the situation with copyright?

Generally, journals possess the formatted and typeset version of your published manuscript. This is why you are usually restricted from uploading the PDF to your own website or a preprint server, but you are free to upload a version with the same text (the formatting may differ, but the content remains unchanged).

Will journals reject my paper if it is already “published” as a preprint?

The majority of journals permit, and often encourage, preprints. A steadily decreasing number do not. If you are interested, you can look up specific journal policies here.

Will I face being scooped?

Preprints enable you to timestamp your work prior to publication, thus helping to establish priority on your findings, offering protection against being scooped. However, if you have a project where you prefer to keep your work undisclosed until publication, preprints may not be the best option.

When is the right time to upload a preprint?

Upload a preprint when you submit to a journal, and for each subsequent submission and upon acceptance (thereby creating a post-print).

What prevents people from submitting low-quality work to a preprint server?

There is nothing that prohibits this, but since your reputation for producing quality work is among the most vital assets a scholar possesses, I would advise against it.

Useful links:

Part of a series:

Pre-registration

The Open Science Framework

Reproducibility

Open Science Essentials in 2 Minutes, Part 4 Prior to the publication of a research article in a journal, you have the option to make it publicly accessible for anyone to read.
