Opportunities in January: What Is Accessible This Month

STEM from Scratch shares chances each month to highlight STEM-related opportunities for youth engagement. Here are the options for January!

1. I-STEM Program

  • Available at Aldershot High School (Burlington), T.A. Blakelock High School (Oakville), and Elsie MAcgill Secondary School (Milton)
  • Four-year program spanning Grades 9-12 (apply in Grade 8 via random selection)
  • Enhances skills in engineering, design, and leadership
  • Fosters creative and critical thinking with an emphasis on the global landscape
  • Annual fee of $200
  • Curriculum is primarily STEM-oriented (e.g. I-STEM Math, Integrated Project Based Learning)

2. Halton Hills Public Library

  • Provides a range of STEM and Arts programs for youth
    • Animation, robotics/programming
  • Many programs last 8 weeks and occur four times annually
  • Also visit your local public library for a variety of STEM-oriented programs for children

3. Chamelea Science Centre

  • For kids aged 3-12 in Toronto
    • Accessible for residents of Vaughn/Markham
  • 8-week sessions, lasting 1 hour each, with flexible scheduling, costs between 100-300 dollars
  • Offers STEM workshops and classes led by qualified educators
  • Encourages hands-on learning, allowing students to take their projects home

4. Carnegie Mellon’s Open Learning Initiative

  • Designed for high school students
  • Costs between $10 to $80, with most programs priced at $25 per student (only pay for selected courses)
  • Open Learning Initiative (OLI) courses offering various STEM subjects, including Computer Science and Programming, Life Sciences, Mathematics and Logic
    • Each course includes interactive activities, assessments, and multimedia resources
    • Flexible pacing for study
    • Application required; deadlines and program dates vary by course
  • Available for remote learning

5. Girls Who Code
