IUPAC Supports the Integration of New Responsible Chemistry Principles in Undergraduate Educational Materials

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) has recently introduced a collection of guiding principles for responsible chemistry designed to ignite a worldwide conversation on the ethical practice of chemistry. Characterized as a “call to action,” these principles urge scientists, educators, industry experts, policymakers, and aspiring chemists to synchronize their efforts with the pressing needs of humanity and are meant to serve as an adaptable resource.

These guiding principles emphasize responsible innovation, safety, sustainability, inclusivity, integrity, and accuracy, and were unveiled during the American Chemical Society gathering in Washington DC. The initiative, led by IUPAC past presidents Mark Cesa and Javier García-Martinez, highlights these principles as essential components for dialogue within the chemistry community and beyond.

Coinciding with the IUPAC World Chemistry Congress centered on sustainable futures, the principles have been met with excitement and seek to be woven into educational resources and chemistry curricula globally. The project aims to integrate these principles with existing frameworks, such as the 12 principles of green chemistry, to broaden the discussion about the ethical aspects of chemistry.

Looking ahead, IUPAC intends to collaborate with the global chemistry education sector through various initiatives and events, including the International Congress on Chemistry Education. The distribution will be enhanced by translating the principles into several languages and promoting their incorporation into chemistry education universally.
