Genius Lab Gear in the United States has finalized testing on prototypes of a lab coat intended for expectant mothers in laboratory environments. Pre-orders are set to commence on 1 November, with global shipping kicking off on 14 November. This effort is aimed at tackling safety and comfort issues faced by pregnant scientists, who frequently depend on oversized lab coats due to a scarcity of appropriate choices.
Accessible STEM resources are crucial, yet maternity design has been neglected, as highlighted by a 2022 Lab Coat Project survey involving over 1500 scientists. Pregnant women often must modify lab coats or wear poorly fitting garments, which affects their work safety and comfort levels. Genius Lab Gear’s maternity lab coat aims to remedy this, informed by a survey of over 170 pregnant researchers that brought to light issues that arise around the fifth month of pregnancy, like heat retention due to polyester, poorly positioned pockets, and the requirement for adjustable attributes.
Derek Miller from Genius Lab Gear stresses the necessity of raising awareness about maternity lab coats, as noted by survey responses detailing makeshift solutions such as sewing costumes. Some feedback mentioned the dangers posed by certain chemicals for pregnant women, highlighting the need for cooperation with supervisors to guarantee safe laboratory practices.
The coat, crafted from 100% breathable cotton, boasts an adjustable belt, pleated panels for enhanced movement, knit cuffs, convertible collars, and strategically placed pockets. It is also designed for use after pregnancy. Named in honor of Alma Levant Hayden, the first African–American woman chemist in a US federal agency, the coat embodies both practicality and historical acknowledgment. Approximately 10,000 women in the US could receive benefits each year, with 500 annual sales required for the project’s sustainability.
