Al-Khwarizmi Did Not Develop, Conceive, or Formulate the Algorithm

Ihtesham Ali, boasting a notable Twitter following of 29.5k, shared an extensive homage to the prominent Islamic scholar Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi. While he accurately emphasizes al-Khwarizmi’s significant contributions to mathematics, astronomy, and geography, certain assertions regarding his influence on computer science and his ethnic background are debatable. Although he is acknowledged for establishing foundational principles in algebra and algorithms, the link to contemporary computing is overstated. Additionally, his classification as Persian is flawed; he hailed from Khwarazm (present-day Uzbekistan). Despite these misrepresentations, Ali’s post illustrates a larger pattern of historical inaccuracies.
