**Johnson & Johnson Reaches $5.5 Billion Settlement Over Talc Lawsuits**
In a significant agreement, the US pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has consented to pay $5.5 billion to resolve around 76,000 lawsuits in the United States. These legal actions claim that the company’s baby powder and other talc-based items caused ovarian cancer. Revealed on July 27, this settlement may conclude over ten years of litigation if it satisfies the requirement of acceptance by at least 95% of eligible claimants. If given the green light, J&J will initiate a payment of up to $3 billion by 2027, with further payments to follow after 2028.
Throughout the lawsuits, J&J has consistently asserted that their talc-based cosmetic items are safe, insisting they do not contain asbestos and do not lead to cancer. Erik Haas, J&J’s global vice president of litigation, recognized the settlement as a means for the company to progress, even though they believe they would have ultimately prevailed in court.
Past efforts by J&J to dispute findings from researchers who associated talc products with cancer occurrences have proven unsuccessful. The company had labeled the studies as fraudulent, but these claims did not alter judicial results. The lead attorney for the plaintiffs, Chris Seeger, stated that the settlement signifies fair compensation for impacted individuals. He highlighted that the lengthy litigation, along with multiple failed bankruptcy attempts by J&J, has postponed essential relief for tens of thousands of women and their families.
Initially, J&J sought to transfer its talc liabilities to a subsidiary that would file for bankruptcy, proposing an $8 billion settlement over 25 years, which a US bankruptcy court rejected in March 2025. This strategy aimed to cover a wider array of lawsuits, including additional cancer claims, impacting over 90,000 cases.
It is crucial to note that this settlement does not affect lawsuits regarding J&J’s powder products being pursued in the UK and other nations. Therefore, J&J continues to confront legal struggles outside of the US framework.
