When economist Seth Stephens-Davidowitz analyzed Spotify’s play data, a similar pattern appeared: the songs we keep returning to with unwavering consistency are, with astonishing accuracy, the ones released in our early teenage years.

Fifty years of hits, yet everyone’s heart gravitated to those from ninth grade. The music didn’t select that.

It was essential material. You didn’t merely experience those songs; you constructed part of your identity around them, partly by deciding this was your music.
