However, it lacks a comprehensive veterinary case history, so the most cautious interpretation is the narrow view observable in the clip. The animal was significantly inflated, the trapped gas beneath the skin was identified as the cause, and the pressure was alleviated.

The crackling sensation often felt beneath the skin, known as crepitus, serves as an additional indicator that gas, rather than typical body tissue, is behind the swelling. Veterinary assessment and, when necessary, imaging can assist in determining if there are other injuries present and what led to the accumulation of gas.

The importance of identifying the cause

Deflating the hedgehog is only one aspect of managing balloon syndrome. Gas beneath the skin can originate from various sources, making it crucial for rescuers to ascertain whether they’re dealing with an airway or chest injury, an external wound, or another process that is facilitating gas accumulation.

Depending on the situation, veterinary management might involve aspiration with needles, small drainage openings, treating wounds or infections, and repeated deflation if the animal begins to inflate again.

Gas can gather beneath the skin until the animal’s entire silhouette alters, occasionally enough to disrupt normal movement.

The most valuable aspect of the footage is therefore not just the visual change. It serves as a reminder that an extraordinary-looking symptom can have a specific physical cause behind it and that addressing the visible swelling is just one part of comprehending what occurred to the animal in the first place.
