“UK Names New Science Minister Following Cabinet Shuffle”

Liz Kendall has been named the new science secretary for the UK within the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), following a reshuffle of the cabinet. Previously serving as the work and pensions secretary, Kendall takes over from Peter Kyle, who has transitioned to the role of business secretary. This change comes in the wake of Angela Rayner’s departure concerning a stamp duty matter, leading Prime Minister Keir Starmer to adjust his cabinet.

Kendall is the third individual to oversee DSIT since its establishment in February 2023. Joining her as a minister of state at DSIT is Ian Murray, the former Scottish Secretary. Patrick Vallance remains in his position as a science minister. Kendall’s tenure begins during a time of financial difficulties for UK science, with limited budgets affecting the sector.

Alicia Greated, from the Campaign for Science and Engineering, lauded Kendall’s appointment, highlighting the significance of incorporating research and innovation in cabinet deliberations. Furthermore, a shift in the skills portfolio has resulted in its transfer from education to a new department under Pat McFadden, raising concerns regarding departmental duties pertaining to skills.
