In March, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) suggested easing air pollution restrictions on ethylene oxide (EtO), a crucial gas for the sterilization of medical devices, in light of concerns regarding the effects of existing regulations on domestic supply chains. Tighter regulations were enforced nearly two years prior, mandating comprehensive pollution control and monitoring measures in 90 facilities. Even though EtO is identified as a human carcinogen and there have been recent incidents related to its release, the updated regulations would permit facilities to upgrade their monitoring or ventilation systems to meet compliance. The American Chemistry Council endorses this initiative, underscoring its potential to enhance domestic chemical production while ensuring safety.
