According to Japan’s 2025 life table, life expectancy at birth is 87.33 years for females and 81.35 years for males. Both figures experienced an increase from the previous year, with women seeing a rise of 0.20 years and men an increase of 0.25 years, as reported by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare on 24 July 2026.

In an international assessment conducted by the ministry, women in Japan were ranked first and men were ranked seventh. Recent Japanese media outlets highlighted this achievement for women as the 41st consecutive year in the lead. The disparity between the two figures for Japan was 5.98 years.

Life expectancy represents a snapshot, not a forecast

The statistic of 87.33 years does not imply that every girl born in Japan in 2025 is expected to live precisely that duration. As outlined in the ministry’s methodology, a period life table utilizes age-specific death rates observed in 2025 to represent a theoretical population. Life expectancy at birth reflects the average number of years a newborn is anticipated to live if those rates remain constant throughout their lifetime.

Those rates will not stay constant. Over the next eight to nine decades, changes in medical care, infectious diseases, quality of life, accidents, smoking habits, and public policy will all occur. Thus, the figure is a condensed overview of mortality conditions from a single year, and does not serve as a personalized prediction for anyone born that year.

This report features a period life table from one year, and does not constitute definitive proof that current rankings will continue in the future. Japan also publishes a complete life table every five years, while the annual abridged version is intended to monitor shifts in between those comprehensive reports.

The global ranking is not a synchronized leaderboard

The term “global” requires defined parameters. Japan’s ministry notes that strict comparisons pose challenges as different countries and regions apply various reference periods and calculation methods. Its table merges the most recent data available, rather than uniform measurements adhering to a single protocol within the same calendar year.

The 2025 figures from Japan are presented alongside 2024 data from South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Cyprus, Singapore, and Iceland; 2025 estimates from Sweden, Italy, Norway, and France; as well as an Australian estimate covering 2022 to 2024. While the outcome is informative, it does not represent a perfectly cohort-adjusted global census.

Minor numerical differences can lead to significant alterations in rankings. Japanese men went from 81.09 years in 2024 to 81.35 in 2025, yet slipped from sixth to seventh in the ministry’s rankings. The figure for Spain in 2024 was merely 0.03 years higher than Japan’s, while Cyprus’s was 0.09 years greater. This translates to about 11 days and 33 days respectively, far less dramatic than the ordinal positions imply.

Women in Japan had a greater margin at the top. Their 87.33 years surpassed South Korea’s 2024 figure of 86.6 by 0.73 years. Yet again, the underlying years vary. “First for 41 consecutive years” accurately encapsulates the ministry comparison used in Japan’s annual reporting; it should not be confused with a standardized global database.

The average six-year gap becomes clearer in older demographics

The life table encompasses more than just one headline average. The survival estimates demonstrate where the female advantage accumulates. Based on 2025 mortality conditions, 89.9 percent of Japanese men and 94.5 percent of women would reach 65. By age 75, those figures drop to 76.0 percent for men and 88.1 percent for women. At age 90, they stand at 26.7 percent and 50.8 percent, respectively.

The median remaining calculation illustrates the same narrative in a different manner. Half of the hypothetical male life-table population lives beyond 84.13 years, while half of the female population reaches beyond 90.17 years. These medians exceed life expectancy at birth because younger age deaths reduce the mean.
