The aluminum recycling sector showcases a remarkable statistic: nearly 75% of all aluminum ever produced remains in circulation today. The Aluminum Association references this figure, highlighting the longevity and recyclability of aluminum. Aluminum does not diminish when melted down repeatedly. This durability is a contributing factor to over 80% of U.S. aluminum output now originating from recycled sources, marking a notable rise since the 1980s.
Recycling aluminum utilizes substantially less energy than creating new aluminum from bauxite ore. The conventional production approach includes the energy-consuming Hall-Héroult technique, in which alumina is electrolyzed to isolate aluminum. In contrast, the reclamation method involves merely melting aluminum, conserving around 95.5% of the energy. A recycled can, for example, can reach the shelves as a new can in less than 60 days. In the U.S., approximately 97% of recycled aluminum cans are transformed into new cans, illustrating an effective closed-loop system. Nevertheless, the U.S. can recycling rate has fallen to 43%, with numerous cans not being retrieved. Furthermore, some reclaimed aluminum is downcycled into items such as engine blocks, hindering its return to the can production cycle. This statistic underscores aluminum’s reuse potential but does not ensure that every piece will undergo recycling.
