Additionally, pressure was put on the UK Prime Minister to address the methanol-related deaths of two British nationals in Vietnam.

It is first transformed into formaldehyde and subsequently into the toxic formic acid. This metabolism can result in severe health implications, including blindness due to the effects of formic acid on retinal cells and possible death resulting from central nervous system depression.

### Treatment of Methanol Poisoning

Prompt identification and treatment within a window of 10–30 hours can preserve lives, although symptoms frequently resemble those of alcohol intoxication or may present with a delay. Treatments include administering ethanol or fomepizole, which inhibit the metabolism of methanol, allowing for its gradual elimination from the body. However, the high expense of fomepizole restricts its availability in many impacted areas.

The global prevalence of methanol poisoning is often underreported. Statistics reveal significant occurrences in countries such as Iran, India, and Indonesia, among others. The UK Foreign Office has cautioned travelers about methanol risks in several nations.

To reduce the risk, individuals are advised to exercise caution when consuming informally sold or suspiciously inexpensive alcohol, verify the authenticity and labeling of products, recognize the symptoms of poisoning quickly, and adhere to appropriate brewing methods to prevent contamination.
