At eleven, Turere made a crucial discovery that altered everything: lions steered clear of human-guarded areas at night, lit by moving lights. However, staying awake all night proved impractical. Utilizing basic electronic skills learned from taking apart his mother’s radio, he cleverly devised a system using LED bulbs from broken flashlights, an old car battery, and a solar panel. These lights, arranged around the cattle enclosure and flashing in an unpredictable pattern, imitated human movement with a flashlight, fooling lions into thinking someone was vigilant.
This creation, known as “Lion Lights,” completely eliminated cattle losses, demonstrating its effectiveness in safeguarding livestock while sparing predators. The straightforward yet powerful system quickly gained popularity among neighboring farms, expanding to over 750 homesteads and protecting countless lions from vengeful killings. The system’s low cost and significant impact bolstered lion conservation initiatives, addressing the drastic decrease in Kenya’s lion population caused by human-wildlife conflict.
Richard Turere’s ingenuity and resolve elevated him to the global arena. After receiving recognition from Kenyan conservationists, he obtained a scholarship to a prestigious school and delivered a TED talk at the age of 13, sharing his narrative and invention with an international audience. His innovation continued to develop, earning patents and honors, including the European Patent Office’s Young Inventors Prize in 2023.
