Their findings highlighted the significance of practice under the supervision of older meerkats, who offer younger learners incremental exposure to prey.
The study included six litters of meerkat pups, which were given various training supplements over a span of three days: some were provided with dead scorpions, others were offered live scorpions with their stingers removed, while a control group received hard-boiled eggs. On the fourth day, all pups were assessed with a live, stingless scorpion. The results indicated that all pups with experience handling live prey successfully managed the scorpion, whereas those who practiced with dead scorpions or had no experience showed varied outcomes, emphasizing the importance of encountering moving prey.
Older meerkats assist young pups by supplying them with prey that is either killed or rendered harmless. This assistance evolves to include live prey as the pups mature, often disabling scorpions to enhance safety. Such instruction is characterized by the promotion of learning and entails costs for the teacher alongside advantages for the learner, without necessitating human-like intentions.
Additional research by Thornton investigated how meerkats acquired knowledge about unfamiliar foods through social interactions with seasoned group members. Although direct instruction in food identification was not apparent, social engagement contributed to the learning process.
