UK Government Appoints Leszek Borysiewicz as New Chair of UK Research and Innovation

The UK government has selected Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, a distinguished immunologist, as the preferred choice for the position of chair of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). Borysiewicz, well-known for his contributions to the human papillomavirus vaccine that has led to standard cervical cancer vaccinations, is poised to take over from Andrew Mackenzie this summer. His vast leadership background includes positions at Cancer Research UK, the University of Cambridge, and the Medical Research Council. Science Secretary Liz Kendall highlighted Borysiewicz’s ability to utilize public funding in research to drive national economic advancement and innovation. The appointment is pending review by the House of Commons science committee.
