In the past few years, Lake Allatoona in Georgia has seen substantial environmental initiatives aimed at improving its fish habitat. By February 2022, around 225 recycled Christmas trees were installed around the Victoria Day Use Fishing Jetty as a component of a longstanding project that has submerged over 3,500 trees into the reservoir since it began 16 years ago. This ambitious endeavor is overseen by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and aided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and other organizations.
Contributors, such as Jimmy Moore, have played a unique role in this program. Moore, who relocated to Allatoona in 2016, has dedicated six years to creating bamboo pyramids that give a more permanent foundation for the underwater trees. Used Christmas trees provide a natural environment for young fish due to their conical shape and small openings. They are secured and strategically arranged during the winter drawdown, changing previously submerged regions into accessible ground for setup.
The initiative also incorporates a community recycling program coordinated by Keep Bartow Beautiful, diverting live trees into the reservoir to enhance the habitat. The Corps and Georgia DNR began this collaboration in the mid-2000s, broadening the reach and influence of the program.
Moore’s bamboo pyramids deliver longevity, supporting the trees and extending habitat advantages into deeper areas of the lake by securing these structures with cinder blocks. Moore mentions that these attractors offer refuge to smaller fish without disintegrating rapidly, in contrast to the Christmas trees, which ultimately lose their integrity.
Supported by various partners, including Marietta Bassmasters, Boy Scouts, and local conservation organizations, the program has greatly improved fishing conditions, according to Georgia DNR’s Jim Hakala. However, there are no formal fish population surveys or catch-rate statistics available to measure these advancements.
